Jon Chappell via Beibei Zhang asks a very serious question regarding the work 洋兵纪略 also known as the 江苏助剿 by 董恂 in the late Qing period. The text says that it was compiled after 1864 from state archives (which is already obvious from its contents). It is included in the 太平天国文献彙編 published in 1973 in Taipei. The only introduction given in that book (or other volumes in which it was included) says it was copied from a 5th manuscript by the Dong family now held by 北大 library. I cannot find anything else out about it online either in Chinese or English or using the beida library catalogue. For my research I would like (if possible) to know how widely read it was and when (and if) it was published in the Qing period for a scholarly audience.
